Why a Neurodivergent Counsellor Might be Exactly What you Need

Why a Neurodivergent Counsellor Might Be Exactly What You Need,

By N Sherratt

If you’re neurodivergent—whether that means you’re autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or have another form of cognitive difference—finding a counsellor who truly gets you can make a world of difference. For many, that connection is stronger and more affirming when the counsellor is neurodivergent too.

Here’s why it can help:

1. Shared Lived Experience

A neurodivergent counsellor is more likely to understand the nuances of your experience—not because they’ve read about it, but because they’ve lived it. This means less time explaining the "why" behind your reactions or behaviours and more time getting to the heart of what you need.

2. Less Masking, More Authenticity

Many neurodivergent people feel pressure to mask or hide their differences, even in therapy.

With a neurodivergent counsellor, there’s often a deeper sense of psychological safety. You can stim, speak tangentially, avoid eye contact or just be yourself without fear of being misunderstood or judged.

3. Communication and Support

Neurodivergent counsellors may naturally adapt their communication style to suit yours. Whether you prefer directness, prompts or slower-paced sessions, an ND counsellor could be more aware of these needs and open to adjusting how they work.

4. Neuro-Affirming

ND counsellors can be more likely to embrace and affirm your differences. They can help you navigate challenges without suggesting that your brain needs to be “fixed.”

5. Representation Matters

Just knowing that someone like you can thrive in a professional, helping role can be empowering. It challenges stereotypes and sends a powerful message: neurodivergence isn’t always a limitation—it’s simply a different way of being.

Therapy should be a space where you feel seen and supported. For neurodivergent people, working with a counsellor who shares and understands that identity can be the start of deep healing—and meaningful growth
