š World Mental Health Day: Listening to Our Minds, Honouring Our Capacity
Today, on World Mental Health Day, weāre invited to pause and reflect on how weāre reallyĀ doing ā not just in terms of productivity or routine, but in how we feel, think, and carry our daily mental load.
From a person-centred perspective, good mental health isnāt about fitting into someone elseās idea of wellness. Itās about understanding ourselves ā our needs, values, emotions, and limits ā and giving those parts of us the space to exist without judgement.
š Understanding Mental Load
Many of us carry an invisible weight every day ā the mental checklist that never stops running. Remembering appointments, managing work expectations, supporting others, planning meals, and holding emotional space for those we love. This constant background processing can quietly drain our energy, even when everything seems āfine.ā
Recognising your mental loadĀ is the first step toward easing it. Itās not laziness to feel tired ā itās human. Our brains, just like our bodies, have capacity limits, and respecting those limits is an act of self-compassion.
š± Tips for Feeling Well
Here are a few small, person-centred steps you might take to nurture your mental wellbeing:
Check in with yourself dailyĀ ā Ask: How am I feeling right now? What do I need?Ā Even a few mindful minutes can make a difference.
Simplify where you canĀ ā Write things down, delegate, or say no when your plate feels full.
Connect authenticallyĀ ā Spend time with people who make you feel seen and supported, not drained.
Rest without guiltĀ ā Rest is not a reward; itās a requirement.
Celebrate small winsĀ ā Each time you listen to yourself and honour your needs, youāre practising wellness.
š Honouring Your Own Pace
Person-centred care starts with believing that you are the expert on your own experience. Thereās no universal formula for mental health. What matters most is that you give yourself permission to move at your own pace, to rest when needed, and to ask for help when it feels right.
Today, letās not just talk about mental health ā letās make space for it. For ourselves, and for each other.
